Course Description:
Students following this programme will gain knowledge and expertise in the basic skills of hairdressing. Successful completion of this programme will prepare students for progression to Level 2 Hairdressing.
This course is delivered through class tuition, self study, guided assignments and ongoing practical assessment.
In addition, students will study at least one Functional Skill in English, maths or ICT as part of their main programme.
This course is a Foundation Learning programme and so in addition to the vocational qualification and Functional Skills, a WorkSkills qualification will also be undertaken.
Course Content:
The Level 1 Diploma is a twelve unit award which includes the following:

- Shampoo and Condition
- Colour in the Hair and Beauty Sector
- Introduction to the Hair and Beauty sector
- Presenting a Professional Image
- Styling Women’s Hair
- Styling Men’s Hair
- Plaiting and Twisting Hair
- Colour Hair using Temporary Colour
- Create a Hair and Beauty Image
- Follow Health and Safety in a Salon
- Working with Others
- The Art of Dressing Hair
Plus Functional Skill units in:
- Information Technology
- Communication
- Application of Number
- Award in Personal Social Development
Entry Requirements:
Normally a minimum of 2 GCSEs (grades D-G). Completion of compulsory education. Students should have an interest in hairdressing. Successful interview.
Career Opportunities:
Students could be employed as salon assistants within the hairdressing industry.
Course Progression:
Students could progress to the Level 2 programme in Hairdressing, either full-time or as an Apprentice.
