Course Description:

The programme makes extensive use of practical training in our modern fabrication and welding workshops, where students acquire the skills to operate manual metal-arc, metal arc gas shielded and tungsten arc gas shielded processes. On successful completion, the student will be competent in the welding of fine grained, low alloy steel and stainless steel. Fabrication skills will involve engineering drawing and the production of fabricated exercises requiring competence in pattern development.

The programme will provide all the underpinning knowledge required to complement the practical skills: these include welding and fabrication process technology, electrode and filler rod/wire classifications, shielding gas technology, inspection and testing, quality assurance and costing, materials, cutting by thermal, shear and chip forming processes, power and hand forming processes, and pattern development.

Delivery includes a combination of classroom lectures and tutorials, workshop practice and demonstrations.

In addition students, will study at least one Functional Skill in English, maths or ICT as part of their main programme.
