Dental Nursing at Colchester Institute

Colchester Institute offers a range of training opportunities in dental nursing including full-time, part-time and apprenticeship courses designed to prepare you for work in a dental practice. Further Education courses are designed to build and develop the skills for employment in a wide variety of roles in the science and healthcare industries. Work experience is a significant element of the Dental Nursing courses. From 2017-2018 Colchester Institute will be running the new Level 2 Technical Certificate in Preparing to Work in Dental Settings (City & Guilds).

If you are already employed in the dental healthcare profession we offer part-time courses and CPD training to allow you to extend your skills and knowledge.

Courses are delivered by a highly qualified team of dental tutors with a range of professional experience and their expertise is valued by our students. Their practical team-based approach to dentistry ensures a friendly and supportive learning environment.

Our excellent facilities include a fully-equipped dental surgery and decontamination suite that simulate work in a real dental practice, where you can learn about a range of dental procedures and techniques. There are excellent resources including well-equipped laboratories and classrooms with interactive technology.

Apprenticeships are available in the areas of dental nursing and health and social care. Part-time courses are also offered in counselling, dental nursing and health and social care.

Full-time Courses

You could become a dental nurse by starting as a trainee with a dental practice and work towards a level 3 Dental Nursing City & Guilds Diploma. Alternatively, you could complete a Dental Nursing Apprenticeship. In all cases, you must study for a qualification approved by the General Dental Council (GDC) and register with the GDC.

Most employers prefer you to have:

  • GCSESs grades (A*-C) including English and maths (grades 9-4); a science subject is also desirable
  • Personal qualities including teamwork skills and a calm and reassuring manner

Apprenticeships

Due to high demand we are offering January starts for the Dental Nursing Apprenticeship Level 3. Contact our Dental Team on 01206 712360 or email dentalnursing@colchester.ac.uk to discuss your options.

If you choose an apprenticeship scheme you will complete a full framework including a diploma qualification at college, alongside a contract of employment. The dental team at Colchester Institute has excellent links with employers in Essex and Suffolk and can support students aged 16 – 21 in finding employment. We work closely with dental practices and aim to match applicants to suitable workplaces where possible.
