Malcolm Miles
Lecturer, Music and Performing Arts
Malcolm Miles lectures in Jazz Studies at Colchester Institute. Following the completion of undergraduate studies at Leeds College of Music and postgraduate studies at Guildhall School of Music and Drama, Malcolm has enjoyed a successful jazz-based career.
Malcolm has over 20 years experience in education, having taught and assessed jazz performance at further education, higher education and conservatoire level at an array of institutions including Guildhall School of Music and Drama, Junior Guildhall, Trinity College of Music, Birmingham Conservatoire and Goldsmiths College.
Outside his teaching commitments Malcolm dedicates time to the composition of learning materials for students to use in jazz performance.
In 1987 he won the composition prize in the BBC Rehearsal Band Competition and has since had his work printed by a range of music publishers.
Malcolm’s knowledge of jazz and his interest in music generally has led him to carry out various research projects. He is currently undertaking an investigation, funded by Colchester Institute, into the musical potential of improvised electro-acoustic performance, based around the saxophone and music technology.
In addition to passing on his extensive musical knowledge, Malcolm is also a talented saxophonist and has continued to play as a freelance performer throughout his career.
